BJP president Amit Shah Saturday kicked off the party's campaign for the coming Telangana assembly polls by launching a blistering attack on the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi for forcing early elections and allegedly not fulfilling electoral promises.

Questioning why the TRS brought the elections ahead of schedule, he asked if they did not have the confidence to face the polls in May next year as per the original schedule.

The assembly elections were originally scheduled to be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls next year.

However, the assembly was dissolved earlier this month following a recommendation made by the TRS government.

Attacking the TRS, Shah claimed that the state government was not celebrating September 17 (the day the erstwhile Nizam state had merged with the Indian Union in 1948) officially due to 'fear' of AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen).

He recalled the struggles by the people of Telangana against the Nizam's rule and the 'Razakars" (private militia that had resisted the integration of Hyderabad state into the Dominion of India) who committed atrocities on them.
"The party which cannot officially celebrate the day cannot safeguard the pride of Telangana," he said.

BJP is committed to officially celebrating the day,he said.

Slamming TRS for not making a Dalit a Chief Minister after the formation of Telangana as promised, Shah sought to know if the party was ready to do so after the coming polls.

He lambasted the TRS for promising to provide 12 per cent reservation for minorities and said it would cut the percentage of quotas for STs, SCs and Backward Classes "as the percentage cannot exceed 50 per cent."

Shah said while BJP came to power in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and several other states after the Modi government came to power at the centre, the congress had lost ground.

On the proposed Grand Alliance of the Congress and other parties in the state, Shah said the Telugu people had not forgotten how the Congress had treated their leaders like former (undivided) Andhra Pradesh chief minister Anjaiah and former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao.

He highlighted the help extended by the NDA government to Telangana in the form of funds and various other means.

Shah also cited major steps, including "surgical strikes", taken by the NDA government for national security.

On the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue, he reiterated that BJP would work towards removing infiltrators from the electoral rolls.

Earlier Shah said in Hyderabad that BJP would contest the Assembly election on its own and not go for a tie up with the TRS.

The BJP would also fight against the "stalled progress" of the state, he said, when asked about allegations of a tacit understanding between the BJP and the TRS.

Shah claimed that the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led party was earlier in favour of simultaneous elections to the state Assembly and Lok Sabha, but subsequently changed its stand.

He wanted to know why the state Assembly was prematurely dissolved, just a few days after the chief minister had expressed his willingness for simultaneous polls.

Quoting from reports, the BJP chief said 4,200 farmers committed suicide in the state in the last four years and claimed that some of the schemes of the central government were not implemented in Telangana properly.

Shah said the Centre had allotted Rs 2.30 lakh crore to Telangana under the 14th Finance Commission as against "a mere Rs 15,000 crore" during the 13th Finance Commission.

Meanwhile, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said the BJP was suffering from "selective amnesia" and they would not succeed either in Hyderabad or Telangana.

Owaisi claimed that BJP would not be able to save their five Assembly seats in Hyderabad and Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat.

He took a dig at the saffron party, saying it was suffering from "selective amnesia", and claimed that it had forgotten that Modi had also advanced the polls when he was the Gujarat chief minister.

The party-wise strength in the 120-member Telangana Legislative Assembly before its dissolution was -- TRS 82, Congress 17, AIMIM 7, BJP 5, TDP 3, Vacant 2, the CPI, CPI(M), Independent and nominated member (one each).
