Despite curfew, shutdown and restrictions, a large number of people attended the burial rites of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, at his ancestral village of Rathusna in Tral area here on Sunday. Seven rounds of jinaza (pre-burial prayers) were held for the slain terrorist.

Strict curfew was imposed in the areas falling under the seven police stations of Srinagar city to prevent any protests and stone pelting. Section 144 of the CrPC was imposed in parts of south and central Kashmir to prevent any law and order issue.

Baring some stone pelting incidents, the day passed off peacefully in the Kashmir valley on Sunday. Police said except for six incidents of stone pelting in Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Sopore, situation across the valley remained peaceful and under control.

"In order to create disturbances, miscreants at these places assembled on roads and pelted stones on police and security forces deployment and also on the vehicular traffic. A group of miscreants also pelted stones on 182 CRPF Camp at Tahab in Pulwama," said a police spokesman.

Police and security forces used maximum restraint while dealing with the situation at these places and miscreants were chased away. "As a precautionary measure, restrictions under section 144 CrPC were imposed in some vulnerable areas to prevent any untoward incident," he said.

Police also arrested JKLF leader Mohommad Yasin Malik and shifted him to the central prison in Srinagar. Police also placed Mirwaiz and other separatists under house detention as a precautionary measure. Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani is already under house detention.

Joint Resistance Leadership, an amalgam of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani, moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, who spearheaded last year's unrest, have called for two days' shutdown and Tral march on Tuesday against the killing of Bhat.

"The continuous bloodshed was the direct result of the fact that Kashmir issue remains lingering for past many decades. It was not the responsibility of the international community, especially the UN and the United States, to build pressure on New Delhi to take concrete steps to resolve the Kashmir issue once for all according to the wishes and aspirations of people," said a spokesman of moderate Hurriyat Conference.

Meanwhile, the Army on Sunday said the killing of Sabzar will not lead to any increase in militancy in Kashmir. "If any terrorist is eliminated, militancy goes down," said Major General AK Singh, general officer commanding of Kilo Force of Indian Army.

...& ANALYSIS

  • That slain terrorists are able to gain sympathy from residents is a matter of concern.

  • PM Modi has called for a ‘peaceful end’ to the situation in Kashmir, reeling under unrest for months.

  • For this he will have to ensure that fringe elements in the BJP do not make “any provocative statements”
