Amid 84% voter turnout, Manipur witnesses disruptions

Polling in the first phase of the 11th Assembly Polls in Manipur took place, with minor incidents of disruptions. Polling in the first phase of the 11th Assembly Polls in Manipur took place, with minor incidents of disruptions. The tentative voter turnout, Chief Election Officer Vivek Kumar Dewangam said, was 84%. "The figure is subject to change, as information from 24 remote polling stations are yet to arrive. Voting was carried out in 1643 locations in 129 locations in six districts. These include Bishnupur, Imphal (East), Imphal (West), Churachandpur, and new districts Phezawl and Kangpokpi. The total number of voters in the first phase was 11,32,525. Over 168 candidates were in the fray in the 38 assembly seats were went to the polls on Saturday.

Imphal (East), Imphal (West) and Bishnupur registered record voter turnouts with 87%, 86.9%, and 87.8%, respectively. In Kangpokpi, the turnout was 80%, while the turnout for Churachandrapur and Pherzawl were calculated collectively at 68%. Polling details from areas in Tipaimukh, Thanglep, Wangoi in Jiribam etc, were yet to be recorded, informed the CEO.

Irom Sharmila's People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) onvenor Erendro Leichombam was attacked by a few men while travelling to Sinam Leikai. Reports said that the men were from the Naharol Leishemba Club. He registered a complaint with the election commission, and later filed and FIR, after he received first aid for minor injuries at RIMS.

There were also over 322 incidences of booth capturing, and rigging coming from various areas. There were booth-capturing complaints from Saikul and Churachadrapur, by "pressure groups" including militants, informed the CEO. "We are investigating that, and an inquiry will be conducted by the general observer tomorrow. We will forward the details to the Election Commission," said Dewangam.

The CEO also informed that over 61.05% liscences arms were deposited, as opposed to 5.6% in 2012. Over 739 trouble-makers were also identified, of which 616 were arrested under section 107 of he CRPC. In all, Rs 26,85,200 in cash and 61,108 litres of liquor were seized.
