The unsavory past of Congress leader Sanjay Sinh and his second wife Ameeta returned to haunt the controversial couple after 26 years when Anant Vikram, Sinh's son with his first wife Garima, raked up the Syed Modi murder case to cast aspersions on his father and step-mother.

The latest development marks perhaps the lowest point in the relations between Sinh and his first wife's family which also includes two daughters. The dispute over property and legacy of the Amethi palace has blown the prestige of the once-famous estate, and its royal reputation to smithereens.

On Sunday, a policeman was killed and several people injured in violence and firing between the police and locals supporting Anant.

"They are trying to frame me in a murder (of the cop) and plotting to get me and my family eliminated. After all, you all know, their past has been tainted with crime and murder," Anant told reporters outside the Amethi palace on Monday. He didn't stop at that. "No one has forgotten the Syed Modi murder and who plotted it and why," he continued.

Ameeta (then Kulkarni), an ace badminton player at one time, was married to national badminton champion Syed Modi. He was murdered in 1988. Both Sanjay and Ameeta were among the seven prime accused. The murder remains a mystery till date despite a CBI inquiry which found convincing evidence of an extra-marital affair between Sanjay and Ameeta.

Anant, a Merchant Navy sailor by profession, told reporters that his father had warned him to stay away from Amethi. "Things were fine and he was a doting father as long as I stayed on the seas. The trouble began when I came to Amethi to ask for my rightful due," he told reporters. He has demanded a CBI inquiry into Sunday's firing incident.

On Monday, Sanjay Sinh and Ameeta also spoke to the media, which they blamed for unduly playing up the story and messing into their private lives. "Anant and his family committed criminal trespass when they forcibly entered into 'Bhupati Bhavan' (the Amethi palace) on July 25," Sinh said. He said the police should evacuate them from the palace.

"I brought up Anant like my own son. Otherwise, he wouldn't have lived with me for 20 years," said Ameeta. "It's very unfortunate that he is taking the prestige of this illustrious family to the streets," she added.
