The ongoing Amarnath yatra was suspended today from the base camps of Jammu and Srinagar due to landslide and heavy rush.

From Baltal and Pahalgam routes, the yatra was suspended due to landslides triggered by heavy rains last night.

"The pilgrims were not allowed from either Pahalgam or Baltal route today due to landslides triggered by rainfall during the night," an official at the yatra control room said.

He said the suspension of the yatra left over 60,000 pilgrims stranded at various base camps including Baltal, Sheshnag, Pajtarni and Nunwan.

However, on the Jammu-Srinagar stretch, the yatra was suspended due to heavy rush of vehicles.

Over 2,000 vehicles of unregistered pilgrims have been stopped at various places enroute Pathankote-Jammu-Srinagar highway as a measure to ease out the rush of the pilgrims, while over 30,000 pilgrims are camping in Jammu base camps.

"The yatra was stopped from Jammu for the second day today in view of heavy rush of pilgrims at the cave shrine and enroute from Baltal and Pahalgam routes," a senior police official said.

"No fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed today to move towards Amarnath from Jammu base camp," he added.

Police also stopped pilgrim vehicles at Lakhanpur Inter-state terminal in Kathua and stopped them there till further orders.

In Jammu base camp, over 30,000 pilgrims have arrived and are housed in various camping locations in Jammu and have been provided with boarding and lodging facilities.

A total of 80,000 pilgrims offered prayers and had 'darshan' of the naturally formed ice-shivlingam at the shrine of Amarnath in the past three days since the commencement of the yatra on June 29.
