Congress leader Amarinder Singh today sought removal of Amritsar Police Commissioner alleging that he was trying to influence the ongoing probe into the alleged assault of a lawyer and his brother.

The former chief minister and Congress candidate from Amritsar today met Vaneet Mahajan and his brother at a private hospital here.

After coming out, Singh told reporters that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered constitution of a Special Investigation Team directly under the control of Director General of Police to probe the case, however, the commissioner was "unnecessarily trying to divert the course of the probe". Singh claimed that the Police Commissioner was "apparently trying to please" the ruling government by "shielding" the the actual culprits.

A Punjab minister has been accused of orchestrating the attack as the lawyer had filed a complaint against him for alleged violation of poll code.
