Crimes against women in Bengaluru continue to rise, and the latest one reported by The Times of India also questions the safety of the city’s public transport system.

The victim, a 25-year year old woman, had a narrow escape, when the driver of the rickshaw she was travelling in, claimed to be a serial rapist and killer. The woman was pushed out of the auto, but not before the accused snatched her purse.

The woman's horror story began when she boarded the auto outside UB City in the heart of Bengaluru, around 7.15 pm. The woman works in UB City and wanted to return to her home in Koramangala , which is a 45 minute ride in rush hour.

The woman noticed that the meter was not working, but the driver assured her that he would charge Rs 100. However, midway he asked for Rs 200, claiming that he needed to fill gas and would adjust it against the fare. “As he spoke, the woman realised that the driver was drunk. After tanking up, the driver asked for more money but this time the woman refused," said an officer who is part of the investigations, while speaking to The Times of India.

The driver then took the woman to a desolate spot, and threatened her saying he was a serial killer and rapist, and she would be his next victim. “He then snatched her purse and pushed her out of the auto before driving off in the dark," the report said.

The woman managed to get a picture of the driver and approached the police, who have booked him under Sections 354 (using criminal force with intent to outrage a woman's modesty) and 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.
