GUWAHATI: The influential 'Purbottar Hindustani Sanmelan' on Monday accused the Assam government of failing to provide security to Hindi-speaking people in the state where a group of anti-social elements were allegedly harassing them, particularly those recruited for government jobs.

In a memorandum to chief minister Tarun Gogoi, the Sanmelan said there was a "continuous hatred campaign by a handful of anti-social elements against the Hindi-speaking people. They have let lose a reign of terror against the Hindi-speaking youths who are appointed by competant authority to join government services".

"The government of Assam has turned a blind-eye to all these incidents and never adopted any serious measures to provide security to the Hindi-speaking youths", the memo alleged.

Complaining that even those on way for government job interviews were harassed, the PHS memo signed by its general secretary Dr Dharmadeo Tiwari referred to a recent incident of ten Hindi-speaking youths hailing from Karbi Anglong district of being allegedly beaten during an Assam Rifles interview.

Tiwari also charged the anti-social elements of tearing up the orginal documents of the railway station porters, who were recently classified as Group-D job holders by Railway minister Lalu Prasad.

Asserting the Hindi-speaking people were an indispensable organ of the greater Assamese society contributing to the state's development and living in harmony with all communities here, the memo said that some vested interests through their hate campaign were trying to cause confusion, chaos and mistrust in Assamese society.
