Allahabad lawyer shot dead in broad daylight, protests erupt

The Allahabad High Court vicinity witnessed violent protests on Thursday after a lawyer was shot dead in broad daylight near Manmohan Park area by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants.

The lawyer, Rajesh Kumar Srivastava (45), was riding to the district collectorate around 10.30 am when the assailants shot him on his head from a close range, killing him on the spot.

Incidentally, minutes before the shooting, a convoy of the Chief Secretary and the DGP had passed by the busy Manmohan Park area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Colonelganj police station.

Ironically, the murder took place when DGP OP Singh was reviewing the law and order situation along with senior cops.

Soon after the murder, high court lawyers announced a strike and went on the rampage, torching vehicles and hurling brickbats at policemen.

Besides the high court premises, there was heavy police deployment at the district hospital as well, where Srivastava's body was shifted.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Allahabad, Akash Kulhary, said land dispute was suspected to be the reason behind the killing. "We have registered a case and are close to identifying the culprits," he said.

Later in the day, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for Srivastava's family.

As many as 43 persons have been killed in Allahabad since January this year. On Tuesday night, Pawan Kesari, a BJP corporator close to deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, was shot dead in Phulpur. On the same day, a school manager was thrashed to death in Nawabganj.
