Large-scale violence erupted in Allahabad on Tuesday following murder of a BSP leader Rajesh Yadav. Supporters of the BSP leader set ablaze a government bus, torched several vehicles and shops and indulged in heavy stone pelting forcing police to open fire, use tear gas shells and lathi-charge. About a dozen people were detained in connection with the arson.
The SP City S.S. Meena said that BSP leader Rajesh Yadav had gone to Tarachand Hostel in Allahabad University along with his friend and business partner Dr Mukul at around 2.30 am. An altercation took place with some unknown person there and he was shot in his car.
His business partner Dr Mukul brought Rajesh to his clinic where he succumbed to gun shot injuries. “We have found several empty cartridges from the car which bore attack marks also. A case has been registered and investigation on,” said SP City.
A native of Duguna village in Bhadohi district, Rajesh had contested 2017 Assembly polls against mafia don Vijay Mishra from Gyanpur Assembly seat in Bhadohi. Currently, Rajesh and his family was residing in flat at Harit Kunj Apartment, Company Baag in Allahabad.
On hearing the news of his murder, a large number of BSP leader’s supporters gathered at his residence on Tuesday morning and torched a UPSRTC bus and several vehicles. Several policemen and bystanders sustained injuries when they indulged in heavy brick-batting.
Police fired few shots in the air, used water cannon and tear gas shells to control the agitated mob. About a dozen BSP supporters were rounded up and later released.
Rajesh’s wife Monica has charged Dr Mukul of hatching a conspiracy to murder her husband. She alleged that Dr Mukul was having some dispute with Rajesh on some business matter. Rajesh spoke to his wife last around 2 am saying that he was with Dr Mukul and will return in an hour’s time.
“We have recorded statements of Dr Mukul and Rajesh’s wife and other relatives. A raid was also conducted at Tarachand Hostel and we have detained a few inmates for interrogation. CCTV footage is also being obtained. We will be able to throw some light in the case in a day or two after completing initial investigation,” said SP City S.S. Meena.
