In a sordid reminder to December 2012 Delhi rape case, a woman's half-eaten body was found in Rohtak after being raped and mutilated. Soon after the media carried the story, there were protests carried out across Rohtak. Unable to catch the rapists for five days after finding the body, Rohtak police was under scrutiny for inaction. But on  Monday, seven men confessed to the crime and were taken into custody.

Who was the victim?
The 28-year-old victim was a mentally-challenged Nepali girl living in Rohtak. The victim was staying with her sister and was undergoing treatment at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS).  The victim's sister worked as a domestic help in the city.

What happened?
The victim's body was found raped and mutilated on the Rohtak-Hisar highway. When the body was found, its two hands and left side of the body was missing.

What was discovered after post-mortem?
After a five-hour long autopsy, it was concluded that her lungs and heart were missing from her body. Animals had gnawed her head off and her skull was fractured. A 16 cm long and 4 cm wide stick was found in her vagina along with stones and a number of condoms. There were several injury marks on her private parts, thighs and chest.

When was the complaint filed?
As per victim's sister's allegations, the police refused to file a missing report until February 1st. It was only three days after the complaint was filed, police found the body on the highway.

What did the police do?
The police filed a case under various sections of IPC, including murder, rape and unnatural sexual act and destruction of evidence against unknown people. The police tried to retrieve various CCTV footages from different parts of the city. It even announced an award of Rs 1 lakh for any information provided regarding the perpetrators.

Five days after the body was found, a group of men who allegedly confessed to committing the crime were arrested by the police. 7 men were taken into custody after their confession, while sources say that one more man who is allegedly involved is at large.

How are the politicians reacting?
Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhoopinder Singh Hooda did not miss this chance to attack the BJP state government. He condemned the attack and accused the government of lawlessness.

Rohtak in Haryana has been an epicentre of crimes against women for a long time. Last month, PM Narendra Modi launched his pet project 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' in Haryana as his first step towards women security. Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar has lauded his police force cracking the case.
