O Paneerselvam, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has a challenging task at hand this time as the much-adored "Amma" Jayalalithaa stands disqualified as an MLA following her conviction and four-year imprisonment in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate wealth case by a Bangalore court on Saturday and faces and uncertain political future while the party has to prepare for assembly elections in 18 months.

Incidentally, Paneerselvam is the first man from the Thevar community to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Representing Bodinayakanur Assembly constituency in Theni District in the current assembly, Paneerselvam has risen from humble origins. Here are 5 things should know about him-

1) Born in 1951, O Pannerselvam started his political career as the Chairman of Periakulam municipality in 1996. The 63-year-old leader from Thevar community was a tea stall owner.

2) As a member of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Paneerselvam won assembly elections from Periakulm in 2001. He was sworn in as a stand in Chief Minister as Jayalalithaa was barred by the Supreme Court from holding office due to several charges in corruption cases.

3) In March 2002, he had to resign from the post when Jazyalaithaa came back to take up the mantle. He was widely criticized of heading a puppet government during his tenure.

4) Political flight- As a graduate, he ran for Assembly elections 2001 and was made the Revenue Minister straight away. His political career has seen two key portfolios of Finance and Public Works. He also served as the leader of the AIADMK legislative party and the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly for about two weeks, after the party lost the assembly elections in May 2006.

5) After the conviction of Jayalalithaa on September 27 on the disproportionate assets case, Paneerselvam has been appointed as the incumbent Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in replacement. Ironically, around the same time in 2001, Paneerselvam made his debut as the Chief Minister, when Jayalalithaa was accused of corruption charges.
