Putting an end to speculations, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday elected Devendra Fadnavis as the new chief minister of Maharashtra. The 44-year old Fadnavis, who secured his seat from South West Nagpur, is said to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party's national president Amit Shah. Here is all you need to know about Maharashtra's new chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

- Devendra Fadnavis was born in Nagpur in 1970. His father, Gangadharrao Fadnavis, was an MLC from Nagpur (first with Jan Sangh, later Janata Party, and BJP). His mother, Sarita Fadnavis, was the Director of Vidarbh Housing Credit Society. Fadnavis married Amruta Ranade in 2006, who is an Associate Vice President, Branch Head at Axis bank and they have a daughter.

- Fadnavis holds a graduate degree in law from Nagpur University, a post-graduate degree in Business Management and a diploma in Methods and Techniques of Project Management from DSE Berlin.

- Fadnavis started his political career in the mid-90s and in a short span, became a political leader of the masses. He has served as an elected member in the Municipal Corporation of Nagpur for two consecutive terms, in 1992 and 1997.

- Since 1999, Fadnavis has been elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra state consecutively for three terms, and have been a part of various committees over the years. He has also won the 'Best Parliamentarian’ award for the year 2002-2003 by the Commonwealth Parliamentarian Association.

- Fadnavis has been a member of various committees like the Estimate Committee, Rules Committee, Public Undertaking Committee, Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, Standing Committee on Urban Development and Housing, Joint Select Committee on Reserve Funds and the Joint Select Committee on Self Finance Schools.

- Devendra Fadnavis has also been a part of various agitations, like the fight against non-agricultural tax, fee hike by professional colleges, for extending limits for non-creamy layer, load shedding, for increasing medical college seats and special package, memorial of Sant Jagnade Maharaj, ownership rights for slum dwellers of Kamgar Colony and Tukdoji Nagar in Parsodi, for MIHAN Cargo and rehabilitation of MIHAN affected people and for the welfare of Walmiki, Sudarshan Mahiyar Community.
