Aligarh Muslim University sends showcause notices to 2 students over unauthorised Tricolour rally

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has issued a showcause notice to two students for organising a Tricolour bike rally on campus without taking prior permission from the authorities. The varsity also said the students had brought 'outsiders and anti-social elements' to take part in the rally.

AMU Proctor Mohd Mohsin Khan sent the showcause notice to the two students, identified as Ajay Singh and Sonveer. The notice asked the students to provide their explanation by Wednesday, failing which it would be assumed that they had nothing to say in their defence and action would be initiated against them according to the university's rules governing students' conduct.

"It has been reported by the Security Personnel of the Proctor Office that you along with some unidentified persons assembled…on 22.01.2019 at about 12:00 Noon and organized a bike rally without prior permission from the competent authority while classes in the University on peak level (sic)," read the notice from the Proctor.

"It has further been reported that you misguided the students to leave their classes and be a part of your gathering and bike rally during class hours without permission," the notice said.

It also alleged that "outsiders and anti-socials" were part of the rally, and said this had "created fear" among the students of the university and given it a bad name.

"In view of the above facts and circumstances, you have violated the AMU Students' Conduct and Discipline Rules, 1985," read the letter, a copy of which was marked to a number of university officials and the students' parents.
