Aligarh Muslim University researchers develop anti-ageing cream

Unlike other products available to Indians, new cream's formula uses substances from nature extracted with the help of nanotechnology

Researchers at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have developed a cost-effective anti-ageing cream. The university claims that the cream is a first of its kind, created using nanotechnology. The university has initiated a process to patent the product and plans to sell the formula in the market.

A team of scientists of the department of applied physics -- Dr Alim Naqvi, Dr Brij Raj Singh and Dr Wasir Khan – are behind this innovation. The team feels that the invention is going to revolutionise the anti-ageing products market. “Our product is made from natural substances, readily available in India. The cost of making the cream would be half of those available in the market,” professor Alim Naqvi told dna from Aligarh.

About a year ago, the department had developed a formula for the preservation of fruits and vegetables. The patent was named 'development of nano formation for fruits and vegetables at room temperature'. The product is now undergoing bio-safety analysis.“We were approached by several food processing companies. However, we are testing its effect on the environment and humans. If satisfactory, we will sell the formula,” said professor Brij Raj Singh. The technology helps preserve raw vegetables and fruits for about two months in room temperature.

It was after the success of its fruits and vegetable formula that the inspiration for creating an anti-ageing cream evolved. “We thought of making the formula work for the human skin. Elements from nature were extracted and created with the help of nanotechnology to suit human needs,” added the professor. The department took six months to come out with the cream.

Several cosmetic manufacturers are producing anti-ageing creams. But, the department is of the view that their formula is not just more effective but unlike other expensive anti-ageing creams available in the market, it will cater to a mass consumers.
