Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has not barred any newspaper from reaching its premises, Press Council of India Chairman Justice (retd) Markandey Katju said on Sunday citing his telephonic talk with the Vice Chancellor.

"I just spoke on the mobile with the Vice-Chancellor," Katju said in a statement in Delhi. He said he asked the VC whether he has issued any order banning a particular English daily. "He (VC) said he has not issued any such order and that a villification campaign is being carried on against him by some people," the statement added.

The former Supreme Court judge said a lot of pressure had been put on him since on Saturday to condemn AMU VC by various media persons but he refused to do so.

"I said I will not issue any such statement until I ascertain the correct facts," he said.
