Taking its attempts to check cheating to new heights, an Aligarh college has gone one step too far and installed CCTVs in washrooms — but only in the male ones.

Students of the Dharam Samaj Degree College in Aligarh are now up in arms against the management for installing the CCTVs in three male toilets in the campus as an anti-copying measure.

"During a three-hour examinations, hardly any student goes to the toilet. How will any student use washroom for cheating purposes? It is intruding on our privacy and we will fight to get the CCTVs removed from the toilets," said Sanjay Kumar, a college student.

After the Yogi Adityanath government made it mandatory to install CCTVs in all classrooms to check cheating, this the first instance of any school or college installing CCTVs in washrooms.

However, principal Dr HP Gupta said that there was nothing wrong in it since the CCTVs are installed in the toilets at a location that it only shows the back of the students while using the urinals. "We have installed the cameras at strategic points. It shows only back of students when they relieve themselves. Where is the question of invasion in their privacy?" said Dr Gupta. He claimed that a separate room has been set-up for watching live footage from toilets to nab those involved in cheating.

Another senior teacher added that the decision was taken by the college management after due deliberations and in the interests of students.

Meanwhile, students have threatened to launch a stir when the college reopens after examinations if CCTVs are not removed from the urinals by then.
