The Samajwadi Party, it appears, has gone all out in organising its annual national convention, if what reports suggest.

The convention will take place on Thursday, and the organisers have left no stone unturned to ensure everyone is ‘treated well’.

Elaborate and lavish arrangements have been made for 15,000 delegates coming from about a dozen states to participate in the national convention. The party has booked 36 resorts, 20 marriage halls and almost all hotels in and around Agra for the comfortable stay of party delegates.

For Akhilesh and his wife Dimple Yadav, a luxury suite has been booked in Oberoi Amar Vilas where a room is reportedly priced at Rs 45,000 per night. Suites in Mughal Hotel have been for Mulayam Singh Yadav, while the party has booked rooms in JP Hotel for Ram Gopal Yadav and other senior party leaders. Party MPs, MLAs will stay in JP, Clark, Ramanda, Grand and Gateway hotels while stay arrangements for delegates have been made in resorts and marriage halls.

A huge water-proof pandal having a seating capacity of 15,000 is ready to welcome delegates. A 60X100-foot dais has been constructed for 100 VVIPs. Delegates will splurge on Agra’s famous Barai Jalebi, Milk, Kachauri in sumptuous breakfast, Paneer and other vegetables in lunch.

However, despite the grand gala and the money that is being spent on the festivities, one question arises: The presence of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

On Wednesday, the patriarch made last minute efforts to unite the party and Yadav family. He advised his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav, who called upon him, to bury hatchets with Akhilesh by offering him the post of party National General Secretary a place in the national executive to strengthen the party.

After extending advance greetings to his nephew Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday over telephone, Shivpal called upon Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday. During the meeting, the rebel SP leader lodged his protest with Mulayam for not being invited by Akhilesh for the State Convention and as special invitee for the national convention.

Earlier, Akhilesh had personally extended invitation to his father Mulayam on September 28. While Mulayam found place in posters put up all over Agra for the convention, Shivpal’s photograph was missing. It clearly suggested that Akhilesh and Prof Ram Gopal Yadav are not ready to give into Shivpal’s demands.

A section of Samjwadis claimed that Mulayam has agreed to give up party National President’s post for son Akhilesh and may fly to Agra on a friend’s aircraft to attend the convention on Thursday. But Mulayam is known for springing surprises in politics. After meeting Shivpal, Mulayam may decide to stay away from the convention to buy more time for uniting party and family than to side openly with Akhilesh. For Mulayam knows that going to Agra without Shivpal will cause a vertical split in the party.

Earlier, the national executive met on Wednesday under Akhilesh Yadav to decide the agenda for the one-day convention on Thursday. The party will have an open session to elect Akhilesh Yadav as party National President for a term of five years.

The session will also ratify amendments into party constitution for increasing the term of the party national president from three to five years. The convention will also adopt and pass economic and political resolutions and discuss the strategy for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
