Akhilesh Yadav retires from UP Legislative Council, no longer member of any house

Yadav, who had become the youngest Chief Minister in the country at the age of 38 years in March 2012, retired from the State Legislative Council on Saturday along with 12 others.

For the first time in 19 years, the Samajwadi Party Chief and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav will no longer be a member of the state legislature or the Parliament after his retirement as the member of the state legislative council on Saturday.

Yadav, who had become the youngest Chief Minister in the country at the age of 38 years in March 2012, retired from the State Legislative Council on Saturday along with 12 others. With this, he is no longer a member of either Parliament or State Legislature. He has joined the BSP Supremo Mayawati who is also not a member of any House after quitting from Rajya Sabha last year.

Yadav has already announced to contest the Lok Sabha polls in 2019 from his traditional parliamentary seat Kannauj.  He had started his political career from Kannauj after winning the 2000 Lok Sabha by-polls. Yadav had completed his hat-trick after winning 2004 and 2009 from Kannauj.

He had vacated the seat in May 2012 to become a member of UP Council after taking over as the youngest Chief Minister. His wife Dimple Yadav was elected unopposed from Kannauj. After facing allegations of promoting ‘parivarvaad’, Yadav has already announced that Dimple will not contest again and quit politics.

Those who retired as MLC from the Upper House on Saturday included Akhilesh Yadav, SP State President Naresh Uttam Patel, Madhu Gupta, Rajendra Chowdhary, Ram Sakal Gurjar, Dr Vijay Yadav, (all SP), Dr Mahendra Singh, Mohsin Raza,  (all BJP), Ambika Chowdhary, Vijay Pratap Singh, Sunil Kumar Chithod (all BSP), and Chowdhary Mushtaq of the RLD.

Against the seats falling vacant on Saturday, 11 from BJP and one each from SP and BSP have already been elected unopposed last month. They included Dr Mahendra Singh, Mohsin Raza (both ministers), Ashok Kataria, Vijay Bahadur Pathak, Vidhyasagar Sonkar, Yashwant Singh, Thakur Jaiveer Singh, Sarojani Agarwal, Bukkal Nawab, Ashok Pradhan (all from BJP), Ashish Singh Patel (Apna Dal-S) and Naresh Uttam Patel from the SP and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar ftom the BSP.
