BJP leader Varun Gandhi on Thursday accused the Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh of gagging the political class and said that such a regime cannot last long.
"The government which prevents political leaders or a needy person from speaking the truth and puts them in jail is set for doom," Varun, who was here to meet jailed party MLA Sangeet Som, told the media.
The BJP national general secretary spent about half-an-hour with the Sardhana MLA, arrested for his alleged role in the last month's Muzaffarnagar riots.
Attacking the SP government, he said, "The previous Mayawati government had done a similar thing and the people rejected it...now Mulayam Singh Yadav's son Akhilesh Yadav is also following BSP government and acting against those who are putting forth their justified views."
Varun, who arrived here by road via Jhansi, also participated in a Gandhi Jayanti function.
