AIUDF files defamation cases against national news channel

Opposition AIUDF has filed defamation cases across Assam against a national English channel for telecasting a news alleging hat the party and its president Badruddin Ajmal have links with jihadis.

AIUDF Nagaon district unit filed a defamation case on Wednesday against seven persons of the TV channel for airing the news item on October 28 and 29, party General Secretary Zakir Hussain Choudhury told reporters on Thursday. The case was filed in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Nagaon, Choudhury said.

AIUDF MLAs from Barpeta district along with party's district leaders also filed a defamation case in the CJM's court in Barpeta against the news channel's news item. AIUDF MLAs Abdur Rahim Khan (Barpeta), Rafiqul Islam (Jania), Ali Hussain (Sarukshetry), Abdul Kalam Azad (Bhabanipur) along with party Barpeta district president Samsuddin Ahmed and secretary Sabibar Rahman filed the case jointly on Wednesday.

A similar case was filed by Dhubri district AIUDF unit in the CJM Court there recently against the channel. The cases were filed under IPC Sections 500 (defamation), 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) against the Noida-based news channel's Managing Director, Managing Editor, Editor-in-Chief and Editor Director and others.
