The Election Commission, which has drawn flak over its “discriminatory” role in the Gujarat elections, has also chosen to ignore an aggressive radio campaign aired by All India Radio on the NDA government’s achievements between December 11 and 21, when the high octave state polls were underway.

On Wednesday, the EC had ordered filing FIRs (first information reports) against television news channels for telecasting Congress President-elect Rahul Gandhi's interview a day before the second phase of polling in Gujarat (on Thursday) and also served a show cause notice to Gandhi for violating the model code of conduct.

An order issued by the public broadcaster on December 7 states that the national and regional networks and FM channels of AIR will have to run programmes on the theme “Positive India” on its primetime between December 11 and 21.

The order has listed around eight programmes which would be broadcast by AIR Delhi in this 10-day period, had asked state capitals stations to air similar programmes highlighting positive stories from their regions.

They include special success stories of people who have benefited from various flagship schemes of the central government, vox populi on how government schemes have impacted the common man’s life, continuous radio campaigns on positive stories spanning across serials, documentaries, jingles and slogans and radio bridges which have positively impacted lives of Indians.

The list also includes slotting programmes in AIR, such as public service announcements and slogans, along with voice bytes of beneficiaries of the central government’s schemes, which would be given special audio treatment.

The programmes broadcasting positive stories on the central governments and its achievements will be smartly interspersed with other programmes such as a symposium on “Emerging India”, featuring eminent personalities and sector experts, discussions in multiple languages on Indian religious philosophies on South Asian countries and stories of achievers in various fields.

Interestingly, a separate satellite message issued on December 8 has asked programme heads of all capital AIR stations to identify prominent NGOs working on positive initiatives of the central government in their respective regions and produce radio stories in “regional languages” for various programmes. The programmes will also be included in AIR’s news bulletins.

Prasar Bharati sources said these programmes will also be aggressively promoted on YouTube and other social media platforms with the “positive India” hashtag.

Programme heads of all radio stations will also have to furnish action taken reports on the 10-day long positive India-themed programmes to Prasar Bharati.
