The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), in a meeting held on Sunday, decided to form an expert committee to study the Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq.

The committee will aim to find a solution to the conflict between the judgment, that calls instant triple talaq "unIslamic", and Shariat (Islamic law). According to sources in AIMPLB, the committee will have lawyers and religious scholars who will scrutinise the verdict from both legal and Islamic perspective.

While during the meeting, which was held in Bhopal, the members of the board were divided on the judgment that abolishes instant triple talaq, all 45 members attending the meeting agreed to the formation of the expert committee panel and that any decision of further course of action should be taken based on the committee's report.

The committee will submit its detailed report to the board in ten days' time. AIMPLB is a private body working to protect Muslim personal laws, liaise with and influence the government and guide the general public about crucial issues. The board has a working committee of 51 members representing various schools of thought. In addition to this, it also has a general body of 201 members, including two dozen women.

Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, AIMPLB member and member of Jamaat Ulma had said earlier in the day that the board is considering filing a review petition against the verdict. "We need to check the points the judges have made in our favour and what is held against us and then accordingly approach the apex court with a review petition," he told reporters in Bhopal.

Supreme Court judge Justice Kurian Joseph, while penning down the triple talaq verdict, had unequivocally stated that "the practice of instantaneous triple talaq was something which did not have an Islamic sanction and since it was a sinful practice, it could not be valid in the eyes of law."
