Amidst outrage over UP Police targetting criminals and resorting to encounters, Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya has justified shootouts. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has already served a notice to the Yogi Adityanath on alleged fake encounters in the state.

TOI has quoted Keshav Prasad Maurya as saying, "The aim is to eliminate evil and ensure a peaceful atmosphere, that is ‘Ram Rajya’. He also said no one wants goons in public places to roam around with guns. He also said these steps are essential for maintaining law and order in Uttar Pradesh.

However, Maurya said that the police is not looking to kill criminals, but have to resort to shooting at times in self-defence.

Earlier, paying no heed to opposition’s demand on encounters, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced in the UP Council that his government’s crackdown against criminals in the state will continue.

Replying on opposition’s charge, the Chief Minister accused the opposition parties of patronizing and showing sympathy towards hardcore criminals who are being eliminated in the police encounters. He declared that police encounters against criminals will continue to establish rule of law in the state.

“It is a dangerous sign for democracy when responsible people and parties show sympathy towards criminal elements. Noida incident was just a shoot-out and not a fake encounter as opposition has charged. Even the person who was shot has admitted it,” said the Chief Minister.

.A total of 40 dreaded criminals have been gunned down in 1200 encounters, and this will continue, the chief minister said.

The Chief Minister informed the Upper House that so far about 40 hardcore criminals were killed in about 1200 police encounters. “This will continue till state is free from criminals,” he stated.
