Son of a former director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was arrested here for duping a Britain-based NRI woman of over Rs.10 lakh, police said Sunday.

Mukul Paul Taneja, 50, resident of Hauz Khas, was arrested Thursday from a south Delhi market on the complaint of the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Nisha Karavadra.

Taneja duped the NRI by selling her a luxurious car for Rs.10.50 lakh without informing her the loan taken against the vehicle was not paid.

Like the woman NRI, the accused also duped several people by selling them high-end cars that he purchased after taking loans from banks.

"Taneja assured the victims there was no outstanding loan against these cars."

"He fraudulently procured the registration certificates of these cars without mentioning the loan against those. There are huge loans from several banks against him," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav.

Karavadra informed police she came in contact with Taneja through a newspaper advertisement.

"When the woman could not get the registration certificate of the car, she enquired about it from the transport office and was shocked to know there was a Rs.9.99 lakh bank loan against the vehicle and its ownership cannot be transferred in her name," said the official.

Taneja revealed he turned bankrupt due to heavy losses in his businesses and lavish lifestyle. He then started cheating people by luring them through newspaper advertisements with attractive offers and discounts on buying high-end cars.

"Taneja has several luxurious cars at his house to brag and create his influence in society but most of these are financed by different banks," the official added.

Taneja's father held a top position in a reputed private firm while his mother retired as AIIMS director.
