As Lok Sabha elections approach, the murmurs of a protest is getting louder in the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu with senior party leaders voicing their reservation on tying up with the BJP for polls.

Senior AIADMK leader and former minister C Ponnaiyan on Thursday said that his party cadres do not want an alliance with the BJP. The cadres are unhappy with the BJP as it acted against the interest of Tamil Nadu on various issues including Cauvery, he said.

"I am expressing the mood of the public and party cadres who are against an alliance with the BJP. From the implementation of NEET to the imposition of Hindi and Sanskrit, the BJP government at the Centre has betrayed the interest of Tamil Nadu on issues like Cauvery, Mullaperiyar and Mekedatu disputes," he said.

Ponnaiyan, a veteran leader who was a minister in the party founder MG Ramachandran's cabinet, has joined AIADMK senior leader and Deputy Lok Sabha speaker M Thambidurai in criticising the BJP. Thambidurai was highly critical of the BJP and had said that his party would not align with the BJP as it had not done anything good for the state.

Ponnaiyan's comment coincides with the AIADMK's decision to seek application from Lok Sabha seat aspirants for all the constituencies in Tamil Nadu as well as in Puducherry. A senior AIADMK leader said that no decision has been taken on the question of the alliance for the ensuing LS polls so far.

"The party has formed a panel to hold talks with prospective allies. A final decision on the alliance will be taken by the party leadership after taking into account view of the senior leaders as well as party cadres," the leader said, adding that a section of party leaders wants the party not to have any truck with the BJP.

Reacting to Ponnaiyan's comment, BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan said that it was Ponnaiyan's personal view and not that of his party. "Let the leadership of AIADMK react to such comments," she said.
