AIADMK factions support Venkaiah Naidu

An official statement said that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Panneerselvam over the phone on Monday and sought his support, the latter agreed to support Naidu.

Both the warring factions of the AIADMK have extended their support to Venkaiah Naidu, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Vice President nominee, ignoring the appeal made by the Opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi who hails from Tamil Nadu. Both AIADMK factions had extended their support to the BJP-led NDA's Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind.

AIADMK faction headed by former chief minister O Panneerselvam has announced its decision to extend support to Naidu. An official statement said that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Panneerselvam over the phone on Monday and sought his support, the latter agreed to support Naidu.

However, the ruling AIADMK faction led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has also decided to support Mr Naidu, but it is yet to make a formal announcement.

An official release said, PM Modi has sought Palaniswami's support, adding that the PM spoke to Palaniswami over phone and thanked him for supporting Kovind.

On Tuesday morning, the ruling AIADMK faction MPs led by Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai called on Naidu in New Delhi and extended their support. "I thank Thambidurai and MPs from AIADMK for extending their warm wishes and support," Naidu tweeted.
