Sidelined AIADMK deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran on Friday asked office bearers from his faction to abstain from the general council and executive committee meetings called on September 12 by his rivals — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam — after the merger of the two factions announced earlier last month. He contended that the meetings were illegal.

The general council is set to decide on expelling jailed party general secretary VK Sasikala from the party post of general secretary.

Dinakaran who is the nephew of Sasikala, is leading a rebellion opposing Palanisami with the support of 21 MLAs who were lodged in a resort in Puducherry for more than 10 days.

In a statement issued here, Dinakaran said a meeting of the General Council can be convened only when one-fifth of the members give it in writing and it can be convened only by the General Secretary. According to him, only the now jailed general secretary Sasikala has the power to convene meetings of the General Council and Executive Committee. He said the September 12 meetings convened by Palaniswami and Panneerselvam were illegal. Urging party members not to attend them, Dinakaran warned that those who do, would face "strong action".

Rejecting his warning of strong action, Panneerselvam said that the GC would be held as planned. Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said that Dinakaran has no authority to warn or take action.

Hours after the warning, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal re-issued notices to 19 dissident MLAs who wrote to the Governor withdrawing support from CM Palaniswami, asking why action should not be taken on them.

The Speaker had issued the notices after the AIADMK Chief Whip recommended disqualification of 19 MLAs who gave letters to the Governor on August 22.

Opposition parties led by DMK have been seeking a floor test for the Palaniswami government, whose support in the Assembly has reduced to 113 MLAs as against 117 required for a simple majority. They had petitioned the President and the Governor in this regard.
