The ruling AIADMK and DMK members came to blows in the city Corporation council meeting on Thursday after the Opposition questioned remarks hailing former chief minister Jayalalithaa. The events culminated in the suspension of DMK member Deivalingam for three months by Mayor S Soundappan.

Trouble erupted when Deivalingam intervened Deputy Mayor Natesan who was praising Jayalaithaa as "makkal mudalvar" (people's Chief Minister), and schemes launched by her. Deivalingam took objection to the speech and referred to Jayalalithaa's conviction in a corruption case. DMK floor leader Bhuvaneswari also supported him.

Following this, the AIADMK members were on their feet and there was a clash between them and DMK members. The DMK members, who were evicted from the meeting, later alleged they had been assaulted by AIADMK councillors and said they would file a case with police.

Mayor Soundappan announced that Deivalingam was suspended for three months for interrupting the speech of the Deputy Mayor.
