The unified AIADMK, led by Edappadi K Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam, on Friday informed the Election Commission of India about the merger of the factions and submitted the general council resolutions.
The resolutions abolished the post of the general secretary and created a new steering committee to guide the party.
The development comes in the wake of the commission’s notice to the factions fixing October 5 as the date for he final hearing on the symbol dispute case, involving the factions led by Panneerselvam (AIADMK-Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) and VK Sasikala (AIADMK-Amma). Panneerselvam had merged his faction with the Palaniswami-led ruling AIADMK, while removing Sasikala from the party’s general secretary post.
A delegation of Palaniswami and Panneerselvam supporters led by KP Munusamy handed over the copies of the resolution adopted by the general council to the commission headquarters in New Delhi. “We have submitted the letter on the merger of the two factions to the commission and also copies of a resolution adopted at the general council, amending the party bylaws to abolish the general secretary’s post. The party bylaws incorporating these changes have been placed before the commission,” he said.
Fisheries minister D Jayakumar said that they will get the party symbol when the election commission passes the order on October 5. “We are confident of getting the election symbol back,” he said.
