The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has become only the second state party in the history of the country to have ruled its state for more than 10,000 days. The party reached this milestone on Sunday, under its sixth Chief Minister. The only other state party to have ruled for more than the AIADMK is the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir.

There are a number of states that have been ruled by a single party for well over 10,000 days, but they are national parties like the Congress or Left. The AIADMK has ruled Tamil Nadu for 10,003 days as of Wednesday. This is a period that has spanned 41 years, when the party stormed to power in its first elections in 1977.

Here are the top 10 state parties by number of days ruled:

1.     National Conference (Jammu and Kashmir) - 13,546 days - 5 CMs

2.     All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Tamil Nadu) - 10,003 days - 6 CMs

3.     Sikkim Democratic Front - 8,738 days - 1 CM

4.     Shiromani Akali Dal (Punjab) - 8,219 days - 4 CMs

5.     Telugu Desam Party (Andhra Pradesh) - 7,594 days - 3 CMs

6.     Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) - 7,570 days - 3 CMs

7.     Biju Janata Dal (Odisha) - 6,839 days - 1 CM

8.     Nagaland People's Front (Nagaland) - 5,412 - 3 CMs

9.     Janata Dal [United] (Bihar) - 4,752 days - 2 CMs

10.    Mizo National Front - 4,409 days - 2 CMs

Over 41 years, the party has seen six of its members serve as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - MG Ramachandran, VR Nedunchezhiyan, Janaki Ramachandran, J Jayalalithaa, O Panneerselvam and the incumbent Edappadi K Palaniswami.

Jayalalithaa alone accounts for more than half the AIADMK's entire tenure in power. She was the CM for 5,239 days, ahead of her mentor and party founder MG Ramachandran (3,624 days). The other CMs from the AIADMK are far behind - Palaniswami (649 days), Panneerselvam (468 days), Janaki (23 days) and Nedunchezhiyan (7 days as acting CM on MGR's death).

The AIADMK's arch rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in comparison has ruled Tamil Nadu for 7,570 days. The DMK had three CMs - M Karunanidhi (6,963 days), CN Annadurai (700 days) and Nedunchezhiyan (7 days as acting CM again, this time on Annadurai's death).

The only state party that has been in power for longer than the AIADMK is the National Conference, which has ruled Jammu and Kashmir for 13,546 days. It has had five CMs, three from the same family. The Sikkim Democratic Front is third on the list with Pawan Kumar Chamling serving his 8,738th day as CM on Wednesday.
