In the third edition of Swachh Survekshan results released by the Union Urban Development Ministry, Indore was declared as the cleanest city, a position it managed to retain.

Ahmedabad has moved up two spots to 12th position in the latest Swachh Survekshan rankings that have been announced after covering 4,203 cities and 61 Cantonment Boards. Only six cities from Gujarat have been placed among the top 50 clean cities in the country.
In the third edition of Swachh Survekshan results released by the Union Urban Development Ministry, Indore was declared as the cleanest city, a position it managed to retain. Indore is followed by Bhopal in the rankings.
Gujarat has been ranked 17th in the list of clean states. Last year, it had the highest number of cities (12) in the top 50 clean cities. This year, 11 cities from Madhya Pradesh have made it to the list.
Surat secured 14th rank in the list. A total of 30 cities from Gujarat participated in the competition. The other cities that have made it to the list of clean cities are Gandhinagar (26), Vapi (33), Rajkot (35) and Vadodara (44).
To make the country open defecation free by 2019, marking 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the central government has initiated the rankings in 2016, covering 73 cities. The number was increased to 500 last year.
This year, maximum cities have been covered zone-wise and population wise under the mission. However, West Bengal had opted itself out from the league since 2017.
