The colleges affiliated to the Gujarat University in Ahmedabad will observe a 'no-vehicle day' twice every month starting March.

A decision to this effect was taken on Wednesday at a meeting of city mayor Gautam Shah with principals of the colleges concerned, an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation release said.

'No-vehicle day' will be observed on the 1st and 15th day of every month and if a holiday falls on these days, it will be observed the next day, the release said.

The 'no-vehicle day' initiative in the city comes on the heels of odd-even road rationing scheme implemented by the Delhi government in early January to reduce pollution level and traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, the principals also agreed to adopt areas around their college campuses for cleanliness drive. It was also decided that training in traffic rules and hygiene will be made part of the college curriculum and classroom projects, the release said.

"There is lack of traffic awareness among 'Amdavadis' (Ahmedabad residents). If people follow traffic rules and learn to park their vehicles properly, then we will be able to solve most of our traffic problems," Shah said.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Gujarat University also joined hands for awareness programmes and organisation of traffic awareness day and cleanliness day on college campuses.
