As the situation remains tense in the Patidar reservation-riot hit Gujarat that has left 7 people dead and ravaged property worth crores, Centre on Wednesday rushed 5,000 paramilitary personnel and five columns of army to carry out flag march in Ahmedabad after reviewing the situation at the top level.

Wary of the situation, Modi himself came to appeal on camera to the people of his home state. Speaking in Gujarati and invoking Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, Modi just stopped short of putting the blame.

"Since yesterday, the type of atmosphere that is building up in the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, the manner in which violence is being used as a tool... we all know that violence serves no purpose," said Modi.

"We have always believed that the development of the state is possible only if we all walk together and stay united. It is my appeal to my brothers and sisters that the occasion calls for a single mantra – "peace". Each and every issue can be resolved through talks," said Modi.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel on Wednesday morning and then again in the evening, and assured her full Central help to tackle the situation.

"The home ministry is in constant touch with the Gujarat government and additional forces have been rushed as requested by the state government. We do not want to take any chance as call was given for a state-wide bandh," a senior official said.

The prompt Central government action came considering that Gujarat has witnessed many communal clashes in the past and situation can turn serious, the official said.
