Keeping in mind the upcoming panchayat elections to be held in April-May, this year, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Tuesday that five lakh houses under 'Bangla Abas Yojana' and 'Amar Bari' schemes would be distributed among the rural poor on January 29.

She made the announcement while speaking at the Mati Utsav (festival of soil) at Burdwan district and added that people from all districts except Howrah and North 24 Parganas would receive the dwelling units because of the bye-polls in those two districts. "The houses at Howrah and North 24 Parganas will be given over after the bye-election at Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency and Noapara Assembly constituency. On January 29 papers for few houses would be distributed from Kolkata," Mamata said.

Amar Bari scheme was initiated in 2013. According to the scheme the eligible poor would get dwelling units. In a similar scheme 'Nijo Griho Nijo Bhumi Prokolpo' launched in 2011, agricultural labourers, artisans and fishermen in rural areas would get about 202 sq mtr of land.

Mamata also said that more rural roads would be done as soon as the projects for those were ready.

Speaking at the occasion she also highlighted how the state 'Kanyashree' scheme had helped in checking child marriages. "Since the beginning of this scheme, as many as 120 girls have resisted child marriage. I have asked the respective district police authorities to reward those girls," she said.

Leaders of opposition parties said that the beneficiary schemes rolled out by the Chief Minister were done to gain political dividend ahead of the panchayat elections which is especially important as it would be a litmus test ahead of the general elections in 2019.
