The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) suffered a major jolt on Friday when its national spokesperson and former MLA Chowdhary Sahab Singh deserted Ajit Singh to join the BJP ahead of crucial Kairana Lok Sabha bypolls, scheduled to be held on May 28.

A close aide of RLD chief Chowdhary Ajit Singh, Sahab Singh had represented Baghpat, a stronghold of the RLD, in the Assembly and was a former minister in the Samajwadi Party government.

He was inducted into the BJP by party state president Mahendra Nath Pandey at a function the BJP headquarters in Lucknow on Friday afternoon. Two senior BSP leaders Charan Singh Bharati and Ranjikant Jatav also joined the BJP along with RLD’s Sahab Singh.

The prestige of BJP is at stake in the Kairana Lok Sabha bypolls as the party has to retain the seat at any cost after losing two prestigious seats of Gorakhur and Phulpur. The Samajwadi Party has given the Kairana seat to the RLD, but fielded its own candidate Tabassum Hasan on RLD symbol. The BSP and the Congress are yet to announce support to the SP-RLD candidate.

The BJP has fielded Mriganka Singh, daughter of late Hukum Singh, who was BJP MP from Kairana. The party is trying to polarise Hindu votes by raking up ‘Ghar Wapasi’ issue in Muslim-Dalit-Jat dominated Lok Sabha seat. A large number of Hindus, who were allegedly driven out by Muslims, were rehabilitated by late Hukum Singh. The issue was also raised in the Lok Sabha.
