Ahead of Bakrid, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued an advisory directing all district police chiefs to ensure no restrictions on the movement of sacrificial animal and carrying its meat by members of the minority community.
However, the ban on the movement of cows and its meat would be continued as per earlier order of the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government.
Since majority of abattoirs in Uttar Pradesh remained closed till date following massive crackdown by the state government, Muslims in the state are fearing detention by police and harassment by cow vigilantes while taking their animals for sacrifice on Bakrid that will be celebrated on September 2.
The issue was taken up by the Rashtriya Ulema Council (RUC) with the State Home department and the Director General of Police (DGP) Sulkhan Singh seeking their intervention on the issue.
The State Home department and the DGP on Thursday issued an advisory to all district police chiefs to ensure peaceful celebration of Bakrid.
The RUC has also issued two helpline numbers 0945230893 and 0522-4104040 if any Muslims face any problem relating to sacrifices.
The DGP spokesperson Rahul Srivastava clarified that there is no restriction on the movement of sacrificial animal and its meat by anyone.
“It’s a routine order circulated every year on Bakrid,” said he.
A Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), however, confided to the DNA that they have been instructed to ensure that sacrifices of the animal are made in accordance with the laid down rules.
No one is allowed to do it in public place and throw blood etc on open drainage, he added.
Now since there are only a handful legal abattoirs which cannot cater to the needs of several lakh Muslims on Bakrid, sacrifices will have to be made at home and blood will obvious flow down the open drainage in lanes and bylanes.
