After bickering over farm loan waiver, the Congress and the BJP have locked horns over urea insufficiency in Rajasthan. Former rural development minister and Congress MLA from Sangod area of Kota district, Bharat Singh, staged a dharna at Chambal Fertilizers and Chemical Limited [CFCL) at Gadepan and protested against the Union government and CFCL management for the acute shortage of urea in the state.

The supply of urea has been below the requisite demand during the sowing season leading to unrest among farmers. In December, the urea to be supplied to the state was 7.64 lakh metric tons. "We have so, far received a supply of 6.03 lakh metric tons of urea against the said demand," an official said. The state is still short of 1.64 lakh metric tons. In the month of November, the shortfall stood at approximately 1.5 lakh metric tons, sources said.

In Hadauti area, from where the maximum suicides of farmers were reported, the situation is acute and the public representatives are eager to bring the anxiety to the notice of the state government and the Centre, lest the onus of farmers' troubles falls on them.

"Despite the fact that CFCL in Hadauti is the largest urea producer in Asia with a production capacity of 35 lakh metric tons, the farmers of hadauti are not getting their share of 3.50 lakh metric tons," Bharat Singh said while addressing a gathering at CFCL gate today.

Singh also slammed Kota-Bundi MP Om Birla for not coming forward to sort out the shortage of urea for farmers through negotiations with the centre. Agriculture minister in Vasundhara Raje government, Prabhu Lal Saini, lost the polls, from Anta seat in Hadauti region.

Agriculture department officials, however, claimed urea supply is adequate for farmers in Hadauti on Saturday. "At least 2,350 metric tons of urea reached Hadouti, today," an official said. Of this, 744 metric tons will go to Kota, 827 metric tons to Baran, 467 metric tons to Bundi and 320 metric tons will be dispatched to Jhalawar," the official added.
