Intelligence agencies have alerted the Centre that the attack on Amarnath pilgrims killing seven people could trigger a communal flare up in Jammu and other parts of the country, prompting the NDA government to strategise to diffuse any backlash.

According to the intelligence reports shared at the highest level the attack is an attempt to disrupt peace and cause communal disharmony in the country.

Top government sources told DNA that agencies are alert over the fallout in the rest of the country and measures have been taken to maintain calm.

An intelligence alert on 100-150 yatris being targeted to disrupt communal harmony was generated on June 25, sources said.

"An advisory was sent to the district magistrates after the intelligence input to keep a close watch on communal discords that could turn into a big flare up," said a top government functionary.

As part of the strategy senior ministers and BJP leaders in other parts of the country have also been asked to make public statements that will douse the passions. "Challenge is to make sure that the situation does not get out of hand," he said.

Following the intelligence alerts the government has also communicated to the BJP leadership to convey to party workers on the ground not to get swayed by emotions and ensure that the public discourse does not take a communal turn.

Intelligence agencies are also monitoring social media closely to ensure rumour mongering and communally sensitive remarks do not lead to any sort of disharmony. Sources said inciting views are being immediately blocked on social media. Also efforts have been made to quell any sort of hate mongering through WhatsApp.

At the district level officials have been told not take any minor communal disagreement lightly to make sure things are not allowed to escalate.
