With hostilities between New Delhi and Islamabad deepening, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur said there was no question of playing cricket with Pakistan after the Uri attack.
“The question does not arise to play against Pakistan today. Every Indian wants that the Indian government must expose Pakistan at the international level,” Thakur, a BJP MP, told reporters on the sidelines of the party conclave here.
He pointed out that there were no bilateral matches scheduled for this year.
Thakur said India had succeeded in sidelining and exposing Pakistan at the international level. “In my recent tour to USA, I have seen a shift in the thinking of senators and Congressmen who have very openly raised the issue of terrorism as a global threat today,” he said.
This is not the first time that tensions on the border have come in the way of playing cricket. Thakur had toed a similar line earlier too.
He said the world will have a better understanding on what India had gone through in the last so many years. “That is why globally we are getting all the support thanks to Modiji’s leadership who have been accepted as a global leader today. In the last two years our foreign policy and the PM’s stature is helping India today for exposing Pakistan and sidelining them,” he said.
Indicating that the stand on cricket was in line with the strategy to isolate Pakistan, he said, “We have defeated Pakistan in three wars and all the World Cup cricket matches. We can still maul Pakistan. But it is important to isolate it globally.”
The last time India and Pakistan played bilateral cricket was a one-day series in India in 2012-13, which Pakistan won 2-1.
