The railways has extended its successful 'premium superfast' concept- with its market fare mechanism- to the tatkal sector by deciding to sell 50 per cent of all tatkal tickets on a dynamic fare. In a circular issued on Thursday, the railways stated that after the booking of the first 50 per cent of tatkal tickets, the other half will sold as per dynamic pricing as seen in premium superfast trains. The pricing comes into effect from October 3, said railway officials.
Under the new scheme, the prices of the tickets will rise by 20 per cent after every slab of 10 percent tickets sold. This slab-wise rise would however will not exceed the total dynamic fare prevalent prevalent for that train at that particular time.
Officials said the move has come after the railway ministry studied the entire premium train routes and made an assessment of which were the routes where premium trains were doing very well.
On Central Railway, routes like Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Patna, Varanasi and Jammu Tawi have been chosen for the experiment. On Western Railway almost all the top routes like Delhi, Amritsar, Gwalior, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Bhind have been chosen.
"The fares for the Mumbai-Lucknow and Mumbai-Gorakhpur premium trains went beyond Rs 6000 when we ran them a few months ago. Similarly the Mumbai-Delhi premium train is running successfully since last December. In the months to come, more and more routes will come under the premium tatkal scheme. It is a subtle way of hiking prices without spreading the burden on a large majority. So people who have booked their tickets in advance can breathe easy," said the official.
