PM Modi meets Nordic leaders to discuss bilateral relations; soon to fly to London

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Nordic leaders from nations such as Finland, Swden, Iceland and Norway on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations with India.

"Series of bilateral meetings with leaders of Nordic countries begin on the sidelines of India-Nordic Summit! PM @narendramodi & PM @larsloekke of Denmark had a good meeting on renewing & enhancing cooperation & expressed their mutual desire to take the relationship forward.

"Excellent meeting between PM @narendramodi and Prime Minister of Finland Juha Sipilä in Stockholm on the sidelines of India-Nordic Summit. Discussed enhancing cooperation in trade & investment, renewable energy, space, waste management, start-up & education," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Earlier, PM Modi hailed his relationship with Sweden during the joint statement issued by him and Swedish PM Stefan Lofven in Stockholm.

Addressing the media, PM Modi said, "This is my first visit to Sweden and a visit by an Indian PM after a gap of nearly 30 years. Sweden has been a major supporter in India's Make in India programme.PM Löfven had praised this agenda and had said that Sweden will help in whatever way possible during his last trip to India."

Hailing the partnership between India and Sweden, PM Modi called it a win-win partnership that focuses on innovation and joint action. "We are working together in the fields of renewable energy, urban transport, waste management. When it comes to trade and investment, we will speak to CEOs and take a decision," PM Modi added.

Swedesh PM Löfven said, "I would like to commend the Indian govt and its strong focus on innovation as a key to progress and prosperity

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi met the King of Sweden King Carl XVI Gustaf in the morning followed by a walk with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven from Sogerska to Rosenbad.

Earlier,  Modi met the Indian diaspora outside a hotel in Sweden minutes after arriving in the country to embark on his two-day visit as part of the Indo-Nordic summit.

They collectively appreciated the presence of the Prime Minister in Sweden while highlighting the fact that after a gap of 30 years an Indian Prime Minister has visited Sweden.

He will later meet the leaders of Nordic nations - the first visit by an Indian leader in 30 years.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven received Modi at the airport. Modi, who is on the first leg of his five-day foreign tour, will also travel to the UK where he will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

"A relationship that has grown in intensity over the years and has a huge potential! PM @narendramodi met with @SwedishPM Stefan Löfven. The two leaders had a productive exchange of views on bilateral and regional issues," tweeted MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

Prime Minister Modi will then attend the India-Nordic Summit and Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sweden.

The community event is scheduled to be held at the Stockholm University in the evening after which Prime Minister Modi will depart for London at around 8:30 p.m. (Sweden local time).

The forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Modi's visit to the UK will focus on enhancing India-UK tech partnership. He will attend the CHOGM in London from April 19 to 20.

After concluding his visits to Sweden and the UK, the Prime Minister will meet Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin for a brief while and both the leaders will exchange views on a number of bilateral, regional and global issues.
