After intense heat, Chennai receives record rainfall

A low pressure over Bay of Bengal has resulted in temperatures in Chennai to drop below 30 degrees celcius giving a much needed respite from the intense summer heat.  The city woke up to thundershowers and lighting on Tuesday.

A low pressure over Bay of Bengal has resulted in temperatures in Chennai to drop below 30 degrees celcius giving a much needed respite from the intense summer heat.  The city woke up to thundershowers and lighting on Tuesday.

According to the Meteorological authorities here, the Meenambakkam Observatory here has recorded 67 mm of rainfall for the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday. The city usually receives rainfall much below its monthly average of 43.9mm; however Monday’s recording has exceeded it.

The weathermen at Chennai are expecting more rainfall in the coming days due to the low pressure that may persist. In several coastal parts of Tamil Nadu fishermen have already been alerted to not venture in to the sea due to the cyclonic winds and resulting rough seas. Nannilam in Tiruvarur district along the delta regions of Tamil Nadu recorded the maximum rainfall of 96.5 mm in the 24 hours ending on Monday 4 pm.

This is said to be the highest rainfall recorded on a single day in this month since 2010. It was 109.9mm in 2010. Almost all the district across the state are hovering below 30 degree Celsius and the state is expecting more heavy rains in the coming days.
