After the farmers' strike and subsequent announcement of a loan waiver for them, the state government employees have announced a three-day strike between July 12 and 14 in support of their demands, including implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations, raising the retirement age to 60 years, filling up vacant posts and a five-day week.

Milind Sardeshmukh, Mumbai unit president of State Employees' Federation, and Avinash Daund, general secretary of Greater Mumbai State Employees' Federation, said that 16 lakh employees will start an indefinite strike in August if the government does not listen to them after their three-day strike in July.

Asked whether the state government employees are raising their demands soon after farmers' strike so that the government is under pressure to accept their demands, Sardeshmukh and Daund said that it were the government employees who were raising the income and revenue of the government. He said that there are 30 to 40 per cent vacancies in almost all the departments and if these posts are filled, it can result in providing better services to people. That is the reason, he said, the proposed strike is in favour of the people.

Sardeshmukh and Daund informed that the apex federation of the trade unions of the state government had announced a three-day strike in January 2017 but Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held talks with the organisation after which the strike was called off.

But despite Chief Minister's assurance and even after appointing KP Bakshi Committee, nothing has been implemented. This has left the state government employees in a state of despair since none of the pending demands have been considered so far.
