Uttar Pradesh Police has done it again! After arresting eight donkeys in Jalaun for grazing expensive plants, Bareilly cops detained a Labrador dog for two days at the Civil Lines Police Station after an ownership dispute.

Monu, a resident of Maharaj Nagar in Bareilly district had lodged a complaint with the Civil Lines police that his black-coloured Labrador was missing for the last three months.

In his complaint, the owner of the dog stated that he had seen and located his dog at Nishant’s residence in Nekpur area where the Labrador was chained at the rooftop. He sought police help for the recovery of his favourite dog.

On his information, the Civil Lines Police located and recovered the missing dog from Nishant's house. But the new owner refused to hand over the dog staking his claim on the Labrador.

Following dispute between the two owners, the police detained the dog and chained outside Civil Lines Police Station from an electric pole to sort out the ownership dispute.

Both the owners were asked to produce proofs to substantiate their ownership claim on the Labrador.

The police warned that if they failed to prove their ownership, the dog will be considered stray and handed over to the municipal authorities.

In the tussle between police and two owners, the dog had to spend two days and nights in chilling cold in open at the police station.

Two days later, Monu and Nishant both appeared at the police station with proof of ownership.

Monu produced many pictures of the Labrador from a puppy to adult and told the police about its distinctive features and habits. Monu also told the police that tale of his dog was twisted at three places. Nishant, on the other hand, could not produce evidences to support his ownership claim except for few recent pictures.

Monu was finally declared the real owner of the Labrador and the dog was handed over to him. Nishant was let off by the police with strict warning.

After running away from real owner’s home, the dog had accidentally reached the house of Nishant, who chained it at his rooftop instead of informing the police.

The Circle Officer (City) Virendra Singh said the police had to detain the dog at the police station to sort out the ownership dispute. “After verifying proofs produced by both, we declared Monu as the real owner and handed over the Labrador to him while Nishant was let off with strict warning,” stated the CO (City).

In a similar incident, the Jalaun Police had arrested 8 donkeys last month for destroying rare variety plants outside Jalaun Disrict Jail. Donkeys were let off only after the owner submitted an affidavit that his animals would not come near the district jail following intervention of a local BJP leader.
