After dipping sales, ticket prices of luxury trains slashed by 10-15%

Owing to dipping sales, the price of tickets for luxury trains have been slashed by over 10-15%, said tourism minister Alphons Kannanthanam. Officials in the tourism ministry had written to counterparts in the railway ministry about reducing haulage charges.

On March 2, railway ministry officials agreed to slash haulage charges on tickets by 50%, thereby bringing down ticket costs by 10-15%. At present, tickets in luxury trains such as Palace on Wheels, Maharaja Express, Deccan Odyssey, Royal Orient and Golden Chariot cost anywhere between Rs 3.6 lakh to Rs 7.6 lakh.

He also revealed that foreign tourist arrivals have crossed the 10 million mark in 2017. “Last year, there were over 10.2 million tourist arrivals, bringing in earnings of over $ 27 billion, or Rs 1,80,000 crore. This accounts for 6.88% of GDP, and tourism provides jobs to over 43 million people, or 12.6% of the workforce,” said the tourism minister.  He said the tourism earnings for 2017 marked an increase of 15.8% from 2016. Domestic travellers, on the other hand, took 1.8 billion trips last year.

The India pavilion at the Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin bagged the ‘best exhibitor’ award among participants of over 100 countries. The delegates bagged it during ‘ITB-World Tourist Meet’.
