A day after Pakistan suffered worst diplomatic setback at the UN, its army resorted to dirty old tricks and fired indiscriminately on the Indian forward positions and civilian areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kerni and Shahpur sectors of the Poonch district in Jammu division.

The fresh spell of ceasefire violation started in the morning when Pakistani troops fired indiscriminately on the Indian forward positions and civilian areas using small and heavy caliber weapons. There was however no loss of life or injury in the incident

“At about 9:30 am, Pakistan initiated unprovoked cease fire violation starting with firing of small arms followed by shelling with Mortars along the LoC in the Shahpur and Kerni sectors”, said Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand, defence spokesman at Jammu.

Troops guarding the LoC immediately swung into action and retaliated strongly to silence the Pakistani guns. “Indian Army is retaliating befittingly,” said Lieutenant Colonel Anand.

Sensing danger, Jammu and Kashmir government immediately ordered the closure of schools in Kerni sector as a precautionary measure. “Schools have been shut in only one village. There is nothing to worry”, said Rahul Yadav, district development commissioner, Poonch.

The ceasefire violation comes a day after Pakistan had to face ignominy when China lifted the hold and UN declared the Jaish-e-Mohommad chief Moulana Masood Azhar a global terrorist.

Seven civilians including two women and a BSF inspector were killed and dozens others injured in the cross border shelling by Pakistan army on Indian positions and civilian areas since the tension gripped the LoC after Indian Air Force carried out air strikes on Jaish-e-Mohommad terror camps at Balakote in February. More than 513 ceasefire violations have been carried out Pakistan army in the last two and half months.

Official figures reveal that Pakistan carried out 1,599 ceasefire violations (CFV) along the Line of Control (LoC) in which 20 security force personnel were killed in 2018. More than 109 people including 35 army soldiers and 21 BSF personnel were killed while 565 people were injured including 302 civilians and 263 security force personnel in the cross border firing since January 2016 to July 2018.
