BJP President Amit Shah on Wednesday strongly hit out at those who vandalized statues in Tripura, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, warning of stern action if any of those guilty belonged to the BJP.

“As party, we in the BJP believe that a wide range of ideas and ideologies can coexist in India. This is exactly how the makers of our Constitution envisioned our great nation to be.  India’s diversity and the vibrant spirit of debate and discussion is what strengthens us. Our main aim is to bring a transformative change in the lives of the people. We are humbled by the fact that our ethos and work has endeared us to people all across India and our alliance is serving in over 20 states as a part of the Government. I have spoken to the party units in both Tamil Nadu and Tripura. Any person associated with the BJP found to be involved with destroying any statue will face severe action from the party. The BJP will always remain committed to ideals of openness and constructive politics through which we can positively impact people’s lives as well as build a New India,” he said in a series of tweets.

As Shah's tweets were stated, BJP Tamil Nadu State president Tamilisai Soundararajan expelled party functionary R Muthuraman  who was arrested for damaging Periyar statue in Tirupathur in Vellore district last night.

Earlier, amidst criticism for his Facebook post where he threatened to damage the statue of EP Ramasamy, the Tamil socialist leader who is popularly known as Periyar, BJP leader H Raja on Wednesday denied that he ever wrote the post, saying that it was done by an admin without his permission.

“The post on my Facebook page was done by one of the administrators without my permission. As soon as I came to know about it, I deleted the post. We have to respond through statements and opinions not through violence. It is not correct to deface statue of Periyar,” he told ANI.

In a Facebook post, Raja said, “My FB page admin has posted without my knowledge that Periyar's statue would be removed  in Tamil Nadu comparing removal of Lenin's statue in Tripura yesterday. Any opinion should be countered by another opinion not through violence. I express my heartfelt regret if I had hurt anyone's sentiment. Moreover, it is totally unacceptable to vandalise EVR Periyar's statue."

Earlier, Raja’s Facebook status read, “Who is Lenin? How is he connected to India? How is communism connected to India? The Lenin statue was razed in Tripura. Today it is a Lenin statue in Tripura. Tomorrow, it will be the statue of caste-crazed EV Ramasamy in Tamil Nadu," read his post that was deleted after the fiery backlash.

Earlier, two people have been arrested for allegedly vandalising a Periyar statue at a municipal corporate office in Tamil Nadu's Vellore on Tuesday. This was followed by miscreants hurling a petrol bomb into the BJP's Coimbatore office.

Both the accused were in an inebriated condition. Earlier on Tuesday, BJP national secretary H Raja had threatened to take down statues of 'Periyar' EV Ramasamy soon, like the Lenin statue that was vandalised and razed in Tripura after the BJP's poll victory in the state.
