Amid threat by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) of vandalism if Karan Johar's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', which features Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, is screened, the film's producers on Tuesday met top police officers here, seeking protection for the theatres screening the film.

A team from Johar's Dharma Productions along with film-maker Mukesh Bhatt met Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattaray Padsalgikar and Joint Police Commissioner (law and order) Deven Bharti, and sought police protection for the smooth release of the film. Mukesh is the president of Film and Television Producers Guild of India.

"Mumbai police will provide adequate protection to cinema halls as and when required to ensure that there is no law and order situation," said Ashok Dudhe, the Deputy Commissioner of Police and spokesperson of Mumbai Police.

The Raj Thackeray-led MNS had on Monday said that it would intensify its opposition to Johar's film as it features Pakistani actor. The opposition by MNS and some other political parties to films with actors from Pakistan comes in the aftermath of Uri terror attack.

"We will oppose the screening of the movie everywhere in the state. If any multiplex operator dares to screen the film, they (operators) better remember that multiplexes are decorated with expensive glass sheets," MNS leader Amey Khopkar had said on Monday.

The party is against featuring Pakistani actors in Indian films and so its opposition to such films will continue, he said. "We will also oppose Shah Rukh Khan's 'Raees', though it is slated to release in January only," Khopkar had said.

"This film has 150 technicians but just one Pakistani actor who has a four-minute scene. We have put in our money. It is a request to MNS, an appeal on behalf of the entire film industry, that we, all brothers, come together and protect the investment made by Indians. Why should we spoil Diwali?" Bhatt told reporters on Tuesday.

"MNS can say whatever it wants to say. We are extending a hand of friendship... The filmmaker is helpless, we should understand his pain," Bhatt said.

Guild has said that films like 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' and 'Raees', featuring Pakistani artistes, should not be targeted as doing so will cause heavy losses to their producers. Bhatt added that the police are with them and the film ('Ae Dil...') will release worldwide on October 28.

"We are just requesting the theatre owners. We can't go back on release date...If there is some damage to the property by MNS, then there is property insurance. I am confident that 95 per cent of the screens will support us," he said.

The single-screen theatre operators have announced that they would not screen Johar's upcoming film. But there was no similar assurance from the multiplex operators, the reason why MNS made its stand clear, the party had said. The Karan Johar-directed 'Ae Dil...' stars Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles and also features Fawad Khan.
