With sidelined AIADMK Amma faction deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran all set to resume his active party work from August 4, rebel AIADMK faction led by former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (OPS) on Monday announced there is no chance of unifying the party unless OPS is made its general secretary.

"The unification of the two AIADMK faction is possible only if Panneerselvam is made the party's general secretary. It is the only way forward," former state school education minister and MLA K Pandiarajan told reporters outside Panneerselvam's residence in Chennai.

For the first time, the rebel AIADMK faction seeking to elevate Panneerselvam, who was the party treasurer to the post of all powerful general secretary. The much-awaited reunification talks between the two warring factions of the AIADMK did not take off after the pre-conditions set by the OPS faction to formally expel party general secretary VK Sasikala and her family members from the party and to seek CBI probe into the mysterious circumstances surrounding late CM J. Jayalalithaa.

Pandiarajan said that his faction is ready to force an election to prove its strength within the party and support of the people. "We have party cadre with us. We have been demanding the government hold local body polls but they are not ready to face the people. We will force any election to prove our strength if the need arises," he said.

The OPS faction's new condition for the merger comes in the wake of Dinakaran's announcement that he would get back to active party work on August 4 when his self-imposed two-month exile come to an end. "I kept myself away from the active party work to enable the two factions to unite. On August 4, I will resume party work aimed at unifying the two factions and strengthening the party base," he said on Sunday. He added that he would tour the state and prepare the party to face the 2019 general elections, as per Sasikala's direction.
